The Hawai'i State Department of Education (DOE) offers an array of services for students identified with Autism Spectum Disorder. Each child is unique and their needs are addressed through the Individualized Education Plan. The DOE employs a variety of empirically based teaching strategies that reflect common elements of model programs for children with autism.

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a disability that typically appears within the first three years of life and is characterized by deficits in social or cognitive functioning. Individuals with autism often have deficiencies in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.

This disabilitiy is manifested differently in every person. There are no medical tests that can be used to make a diagnosis of autism.
