The 2010-2011 Official School Calendar was approved by the Board of Education on June 18, 2009. As mandated by the “Reinventing Education Act of 2004,” it applies to all schools except those on multi-track schedules and charter schools.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 UPDATE - Governor Linda Lingle, BOE Chairperson Garrett Toguchi, and Interim Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi announced all seventeen "Furlough Fridays" scheduled for the 2010-2011 school year will be eliminated from the public school calendar, returning nearly 171,000 children back to the classroom.

The agreement was made possible due to a unique three-way public-private partnership between the State, teachers, and the major banks in Hawaii. The plan calls for use of $57.2 million from the Hurricane Relief Fund, $2.2 million in federal funds, and six planning days the teachers have agreed to give back to the state. A $10 million line of credit from local banks is also available if needed.

Governor Lingle signed Act 143 (SB2124 SD2 HD1 CD1) which makes $67 million available from the State Hurricane Relief Fund to restore instructional days. The governor has pledged to release $57.2 million appropriated under this act.

The 2010-2011 calendar will follow a 1-2-1 year-round model with a one-week fall break between the 1st and 2nd quarters, a two-week winter break separating the 1st and 2nd semesters, and a one-week spring break between the 3rd and 4th quarters. The teacher work day between student semesters is January 3, 2011.

The 2010-2011 teacher work year runs from July 27, 2010 through May 27, 2011. The student instructional year starts on August 2, 2010 and ends on May 26, 2011.

At this time (June 2010) schools are working on their new 2010-2011 school calendar.

Added 7/12/10... Calendars for non-charter schools should be posted by September 2010. According to the 2010-11 official school calendar, the first day of school for students (excluding multi-track and charter schools) is Monday, August 2, 2010. This date may vary by school due to professional/collaboration day scheduling. (For school year 2010-11, each school has one (1) professional/collaboration day.) For more information, please contact your child's school.

Added 8/24/10 ... Individualized school calendars for non-charter schools are completed.

To maximize instructional time, the Department since 1991 has defined the earliest date for commencement exercises as “the first weekend preceding the last day of school for students.” Therefore, commencement exercises for the Class of 2011 may be scheduled no sooner than Friday, May 20, 2011.
